A direct and indirect goal of the courses and pedagogical practices of NOLS has always been to help individuals develop a “sense of place” in wilderness environments. The sense of place concept has a long and rich history in the NOLS culture, and it is used by instructors to encourage students to develop meaningful and personal relationships to places in the natural world.
